All applicants must apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) by December 1 and must register for a PL-1 position through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Applications are considered without regard to race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or national origin.  We sponsor J-1 visas only.

We require

  • Personal statement
  • MSPE (Dean's letter)
  • Medical school transcript
  • USMLE or COMLEX scores
  • Three to four letters of recommendation from faculty members with whom you have worked

We do not require a letter from your department chairman.

Interviews

Interviews are by invitation only, and will be conducted on Tuesdays from mid-October through mid-January. If you are invited for an interview, you will be notified by email via the Thalamus calendar, and we will ask that you respond promptly so that we can do our best to accommodate your scheduling needs. We prefer to interview smaller groups each day in order to create a more personalized day.

Interview days will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will conclude by 1:30 p.m.  The day will include interviews, attending the Med/Peds Noon conference, a tour of the Children's Hospital and our Main Hospital, as well as lunch.

Our residents would like to welcome you to Hershey with an optional casual dinner the evening before your interview.  Dress is business casual. For those who are staying at the Days Inn Hershey, one of our residents will meet you in the lobby around 6:15 p.m. and a shuttle will take you the restaurant. If you are driving separately to dinner, the reservation at the restaurant is for 6:30 p.m. We will let you know the name of the restaurant closer to your interview date. If you have a spouse or significant other traveling with you, he or she is invited as well. Please RSVP for the dinner to slamar@pennstatehealth.psu.edu or dcaldwell@pennstatehealth.psu.edu.

Hotel

As a reminder, we have a negotiated rate of $52 per night (plus tax) at the Days Inn Hershey, which includes a free breakfast along with shuttle service to dinner the night before, as well as the interview itself. When booking your hotel, please let them know that you are calling to book a room for a pediatric residency interview at the Hershey Medical Center. Please do not book through the national Days Inn number as you may not get our negotiated rate.

Travel by Train

The main route serving our area is Amtrak’s Keystone Service, which provides service to Philadelphia and New York City (and stops in between), without the need to change trains. To travel by train from other major northeast cities (Washington, Baltimore, Boston, etc.) you will need to change trains one time along the way. The train comes into our local area at three points:

  • Middletown, PA (MID) - about 7 miles from hospital
  • Elizabethtown, PA (ELT) - about 12 miles from hospital
  • Harrisburg, PA (HAR) - about 12 miles from hospital

Day of Interview Parking

For those staying at the Days Inn, a free shuttle is available the morning of your interview. If you prefer to drive to the hospital yourself, valet parking is available at the main entrance to the hospital or free parking is available in the Centerview Parking Garage. From the garage, you can take a shuttle or a brief walk to the main entrance, then make a left to the Children’s Hospital lobby. Most residents walk from this garage each day, although not wearing their best suit.

The Day of the Interview

Our interview day is scheduled to run from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A shuttle will pick you from the hotel lobby around 7:35 a.m. When you check into the hotel, please let the hotel front desk know if you will be taking this shuttle or not. The shuttle will drop you off at the hospital and a resident and a program coordinator will meet you. If you drive yourself, please be sure to be in the Children's Hospital lobby by 8:00 a.m.

Please remember that you can change or cancel your interview date via the Thalamus calendar. If it is too close to the date of the interview, you may need to email slamar@pennstatehealth.psu.edu or dcaldwell@pennstatehealth.psu.edu. Also, please email if you are canceling and not planning to reschedule so that your spot may be offered to someone else.
