Penn State Children’s Hospital offers a wide variety of pediatric specialists who care for newborns diagnosed with conditions that may require surgical care during infancy. The goal is to provide patient-centered, individualized, and efficient access to surgical specialists, as well as other health care providers.
One phone call connects regional providers with the perinatal program coordinator who can facilitate all of the necessary consultations and tests for new moms. In addition to a full complement of pediatric surgical specialties, a wide range of medical specialists are also available.
The optimal site for delivery of the infant is guided by the anticipated needs of the mother and newborn, with a preference of delivery near home whenever possible. Should delivery be planned at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, a consultation with the Penn State Maternal and Fetal Medicine program is provided. Likewise, if transfer to the neonatal intensive care unit is anticipated, a consultation with a neonatologist is offered. Any additional support services that may be needed are also coordinated.
