Trinity High School Supports Pediatric IBD

On October 18, 2018, Devan Drendall, a junior at Trinity High School, continued Trinity’s support of Penn State Children’s Hospital by presenting a check for $1,500 to Dr. Marc Schaefer, director of pediatric IBD at the Children’s Hospital. Devan is an IBD patient followed by Dr. Schaefer, and he and his family organized a crab fest to raise the money.  The donation will be used for IBD research to find more effective and new treatments for pediatric IBD.

According to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, IBD affects an estimated 1.6 million Americans, including many children and adolescents. The IBD Center in the Children’s Hospital includes six pediatric gastroenterologists, two nurse practitioners and a registered nurse to treat these patients.

At the present time, there are approximately 160 pediatric IBD patients being followed at the Center. Supportive services include social work, psychology, nutrition, pediatric radiology, pediatric surgery, pediatric rheumatology and pediatric dermatology.

The IBD Center at the Children’s Hospital provides annual IBD clinic visits to provide social work and nutrition support, as well as screenings for anxiety and depression. In addition, the IBD Center participates in a number of quality improvement and research projects to enhance the care of pediatric IBD patients. One project includes the ImproveCareNow network, a national quality improvement network focused on pediatric IBD. The IBD Center also has a unique IBD transition clinic that prepares older pediatric IBD patients for the transition to an IBD-specialized adult gastroenterologist. We appreciate Devan’s efforts and Trinity High School’s ongoing support.
