Our mission

Pediatric Emergency Medicine is the only one of its kind in south central Pennsylvania. The space is designed to make the most of the hospital’s emergency health care for children in the region.

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine department is located in the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center’s emergency department. This lets us share resources such as registering patients and using the X-ray equipment and CT scanner.

Pediatric Emergency Medicine is like a safety net to meet the urgent health care needs of kids who live in central Pennsylvania. Our team has:

  • Doctors who specialize in emergency medicine
  • Doctors-in-training (residents)
  • Medical students
  • Physician assistants
  • Nurse practitioners
  • Nurses
  • Child life specialists
  • Social workers
  • Emergency technicians
  • Secretaries and registration staff

What we offer patients and families:

  • Twelve child-friendly, private exam rooms
  • Two resuscitation bays (to help revive patients), with instruments that are specially made to treat infants and children
  • Skilled nurses who are educated, trained and certified in emergency nursing for children
  • Child life specialists who help reduce mental and emotional trauma, and who support the family during this stressful time
  • Emergency social workers who offer support systems to patients and families who may need them
  • The Center for the Protection of Children which identifies and treats victims of child abuse and neglect
  • Outreach about ways to keep a child from being injured, as well as patient education and advocacy

The region’s only Level 1 pediatric trauma center

Since 1993, our Children’s Hospital has been accredited by the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation as the only Level 1 pediatric trauma center in south central Pennsylvania.

We are accredited because of our skill in treating children’s injuries, whether it’s minor fractures or health problems that put the child’s life in danger. The doctors, who perform children’s surgery and provide other health care treatments, are here 24-hours a day to help an injured child right away.
