Research and Education

Basic science research is the foundation for all new discoveries, while clinical research (more than 40 active trials) directly involves patients. Gifts from individuals and organizations to a special endowment called the Pediatric Research Discovery and Education Fund are allocated on an annual basis to support research and education and improve the quality of care we provide for our pediatric patients.

Research at the Children's Hospital is also actively supported by numerous scientific funding agencies and philanthropies, including Children's Miracle Network and Four Diamonds.

Child Life

Two child life staff members playing virtual bingo with children online. As a non-reimbursable service, philanthropic support powers the Child Life Program, which helps kids feel like kids, not patients, when they are in the hospital. Our Child Life staff help patients, parents, caregivers, and siblings feel more at ease about surgeries, clinic appointments, and hospital stays through distraction and relaxation techniques, medical play, special events, music therapy, pet therapy and more. Child Life Specialists ensure that kids are meeting developmental and educational milestones while undergoing treatment. The program also makes resources such as laundry facilities, family lounges, playrooms, and the Ronald McDonald House available to families.

Kelso Fund

Young pediatric patient sitting on hospital bed petting facility dog.The Kelso Fund takes its name from the dog - a Belgian Malinois - owned by the donor who established this endowment that provides comprehensive support for our facility dogs, including the cost of caring for them in their retirement. With this gift, the donor was able to combine his love of animals, especially dogs, with his desire to make a tangible difference in the lives of children. It’s a win-win.

Man’s best friends have long been recognized as great companions. Now their special talents are celebrated as a vital part of the healing care offered at the Children’s Hospital. Your gift to the Kelso Fund will help sustain this animal-assisted therapy and intervention.
