Expert care for children of all ages

Penn State Children’s Hospital General Pediatrics provides expert care to children of all ages - from birth through age 21. Our doctors specialize in the following services:

Primary Care

We provide quality primary care services to children of all ages. Your child should visit a primary care doctor for routine check-ups (preventative care) as well as any non-emergency illnesses, such as a cough or rash. If necessary, we can refer your child to a specialist for further treatment.

Complex Care

Our experienced doctors care for children with medical complexities, such as:

  • Tracheostomy (breathing tube)
  • Gastrostomy-tube (feeding tube)
  • Severe chronic illnesses (such as asthma)

Often, these conditions require that children meet with three or more specialists. Therefore, we assist patients and their families with their care coordination needs, such as durable medical equipment (DME), nursing agency and specialty care.

Newborn Nursery

Our doctors provide care for more than 1,800 newborns each year at our Newborn Nursery at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center's. Our doctors work closely with faculty from the Division of Neonatology, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Women's Health.

Family-centered care is our priority, and our faculty, residents and students work hard to support the mother-baby relationship, while providing quality medical care for the newborn. Infants are typically examined in family rooms with parents and nursing staff, in order to minimize family interruptions and maximize communication. Routine newborn screenings and preventive measures are offered, along with important newborn care information and education. After leaving the hospital, many newborns continue their care in one of our three outpatient locations.

We are leaders in research to improve the care of newborns and specifically related to newborn weight loss during the birth hospitalization. Visit for more information.

Breastfeeding Clinic

Penn State Pediatrics has expanded the Penn State Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic. The Clinic is designed to support breastfeeding mothers and their infants throughout the breastfeeding experience and provide the emotional support and tools needed to be successful in breastfeeding. Families have access to onsite lactation specialists, increased breastfeeding education resources and appointments available in breastfeeding-friendly office.

Pediatric Dermatology

Penn State Dermatology has teamed with Penn State Children’s Hospital General Pediatrics to improve patient access for skin care (dermatology) services. Since it can often take a long time to secure an appointment with a pediatric dermatologist, children in our practice have access to a dermatology specialist.

Phenylketonuria (PKU) Clinic

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is one of the conditions diagnosed during newborn screening tests performed in Pennsylvania. PKU is a genetic disorder that causes an amino acid to build up in the body. Patients with PKU need to be on a special diet. Our PKU Clinic provides testing and treatment services for these children. Currently, more than 200 children and adults are cared for at our clinic. The PKU nutritionist and the director of the Penn State Hershey PKU Clinic monitor these individuals.

Tic and Movement Disorders (including Tourette syndrome)

Penn State Children’s Hospital General Pediatrics works alongside Pediatric Neurology to provided testing and treatment for children with tic disorders (including Tourette syndrome). These are complex disorders that require attention to:

  • Behavior
  • Mental skills (executive function)
  • Medicines to treat the mental disorder (psychoneuropharmacology)

Our faculty members are active in the Tourette Syndrome Association (TSA) with attendance at national meetings, regional presentations and contributions to the TSA website.
