Overview

The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Penn State Children’s Hospital includes 14 pediatric hematologist/oncologists, one pediatric psychologist and nine PhD research faculty.

The clinical service is broadly based to serve the needs of the children of central Pennsylvania and its vicinities. More than 100 new oncology and 400 new hematology pediatric patients are seen annually. In addition, between 15-20 hematopoietic stem cell transplants are performed each year.

Program goals and objectives

The main goal of our Pediatric Hematology and Oncology fellowship program at Penn State Children’s Hospital is to train fellows to become outstanding and independent pediatric hematologists/oncologists and to prepare them for an academic career incorporating clinical care, research and education.

The Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology has undergone a period of marked growth over the past several years and continues to grow. This growth has included recruitment of new faculty members that bring unique expertise to the division. Another landmark of the division has the development of a formal Experimental Therapeutics Program that offers a wide variety of early phase clinical trials that attract new patients from all over the country.

In addition to the expansion of our clinical enterprise, the division’s basic science programs are thriving. All of these efforts have had a direct positive impact on the care and quality of life for children and adolescents with cancer and blood disorders under our care and creates an outstanding, comprehensive training environment for our Pediatric Hematology and Oncology fellows.
